The article that I wrote in 2003 called "Nintendo and the Competition" made some valid points, though I feel in general that the arguement was too strong and narrow sighted. I'd just like to give a bit more credit to non-Nintendo gaming systems. Although I don't like Playstation or X-Box much, I have to at least aknowledge their contributions to the gaming world, as well as their quality of product.
Mind you, with the Playstation 3, I don't have a great deal of positive comments to make. The price seems really atrocious to me, but I guess for the dedicated fan, it would be worth it. For the general public though, it really seems like a bad purchase. As well, I've seen some screenshots comparing games on the X-Box 360 and Playstation 3, and although the Playstation has apparently superior graphics, I found that the screenshots of the X-Box 360 were considerably better. I pointed this out to someone, and they said that the games were originally for the X-Box 360, and were made for the Playstation 3 afterwards, so that could be a possible reason for this. The only other comment I have to make about the Playstation 3 is the Blue Ray DVD feature. I used to think it was stupid for game systems to have DVD player capabilities, but that was just because the Gamecube didn't have it and I was a blind fan at the time. Now however, I think the fact that Playstation 3 has a DVD player, and in particular, a blue ray player, is a great thing. I've heard (but I don't consider the source entirely reliable) that the Playstation 3 on it's own is cheaper than a Blue Ray player, and so many people are buying the system just for the DVD capabilities. I'd call that a pretty good move on Sony's part.
I don't have a lot to say about the X-Box 360 except that I've only ever played one football game on it. The graphics were fabulous from what I could see, but the game was a piece of junk. I won't judge it based on that though, since all systems have those lousy sports games. Other than that. . . it seems okay to me, but I don't know enough to make comments. I must say though, it's really ugly, and despite the unimportance of appearance, I consider that a deterrant.
All that being said, knowing what I know, I'm still a supporter of Nintendo. The Wii to me seems like the best choice, but it all depends on what one looks for in a console. Personally (although I'm not planning on buying one), the price of the Wii appeals to me, and it most certainly seems like the most innovative of the three. And so, I hope it'll conquer them all, but Sony and Microsoft aren't doing too bad, if you ask Mii (a ha ha ha).
