Mario Kart 64 was released for the N64 in 1997, following the success of Super Mario Kart several years earlier. It quickly became a Player's Choice Million Seller, and it is among the best games for the N64.
Gameplay - 10/10
The gameplay of Mario Kart 64 is among the best of any game ever. The controls are easy to learn, and they make good use of the N64 controller. The game is extremely entertaining, especially if played in multiplayer mode, and that is why this game is one of my all time favourites. I never get tired of battle mode or versus mode, even if I play it for hours on end.
Music and Sound - 10/10
The music in this game is very good, and each piece of music fits in well with the level or levels in which it is used. The sound effects are similarily well done, as are the voices of the characters. This game was the first time that we got to hear many of the characters speak, and for the most part, the voices seem to match the characters well.
Graphics - 9/10
Considering the fact that the graphical capabilities of the N64 were not nearly as good as that of some more recent systems, the graphics are quite well done. The usual N64 blockiness is present in some of the objects and scenery, but the characters look good and the sprites on the character selection screen are great.
Replay Value - 8/10 (single player), 10/10 (multiplayer)
This game is fun to replay by yourself thanks to the great track designs and the time trial mode, but the real replay value in this game is in the multiplayer modes, as I mentioned earlier. The versus and battle modes in Mario Kart 64 are among the greatest multipler experiences in any game throughout Nintendo's history, and that's saying something considering the wide variety of entertaining multiplayer games Nintendo has produced throughout the years.
Overall - 10/10
I couldn't give this game an overall score of anything less than perfect, since, as I mentioned before, this is among my favourite games of all time. In my opinion, this game totally surpasses Super Mario Kart in almost every way. The only other kart racing game that I feel is on par with it is its own successor, Mario Kart: Double Dash. This game is a must-have for anyone who owns an N64, and I would recommend it to anyone.
