Super Mario Sunshine

By Kokonut Kong
Story: From inside an airplane Mario, Peach and her butler (Toadsworth) see a commercial. It says: "Come to Isle Delfion and refresh your body and spirit". Peach notices that a strange figure that looks like Mario is jumping around in the background, but Mario and Toadsworth don't. When they go there for a vacation, they find a goopy piranha plant on the airstrip. Mario gets a water squirter called "FLUDD (Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device)" and defeats the Goopy Piranha Plant. Mario is then accused by some policemen who charge that he's the one who dirtied up the place! In the court, Mario learns that the rest of the island has been messed up, too. Mario is sentenced to clean up the entire island. Until then, Mario will not be allowed to leave. Later, Mario finds Shadow Mario who is clearly the real culprit. You must then go out and clean Mario's good name!

Gameplay: Mario's water cannon (FLUDD) and Mario's jumping are the main moves you have. Mario can use FLUDD to clean up messes, defeat enemies and solve other puzzles. Like Super Mario 64, you have to collect a bunch of certain objects. There are 120 Shines in the game, which are just like Super Mario 64's Stars. After you go through various challenges, as a reward you get a Shine which can open more areas. You can defeat bosses for Shines, go through regular platforming or go through special bonus levels where Shadow Mario steals your FLUDD for the level. There are also 250 Blue Coins in the game, and while some of them are easy to find, some are harder. For each 10 Blue Coins you give to the Boathouse shopkeeper, you get a shine (25 Shines from Blue Coins). Also, never fear Yoshi fans! Later in the game you will find Shadow Mario. You chase him and after a while he'll drop a Yoshi egg. You can hatch it and get Yoshi! Yoshi can squirt like FLUDD (although he can't hover), can jump very high, and can eat lots of various enemies! Overall the gameplay is pretty cool, but I have a complaint: Every stage is tropical! The terrian will get old, unless you're a big fan of Hawaii. Even islands have volcanos and snow mountains! Why coudn't there be lava and/or snow-based courses?

Replay Value: Beating the game by beating the final boss (no spoilers here), will take 3 days - a week if you're an average gamer; 2 days if you're a super expert. However, getting all of the shines will take a LONG time. There are a lot of hard shines out there, and one of the main things that'll keep this game lasting are the 250 Blue Coins. About 150 of them are hard to find, and some of them are harder then getting a regular shine. It'll be mighty hard to get all of them without a Game Guide. A nice addition is that you can get sunglasses and a Hawaiian shirt later in the game. However, if you've got this game totally beat, then you'll put it away for a quite a while and play something like Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Graphics: The graphics are excellent in this game! The best of all is the water. It looks nearly as good as the water in real life. The background details and buildings are also wonderfully done. The only things that don't look that cool are the characters -- with the excepetion of the superbly done Petey Piranha.

Sound: The sound effects are excellent, except for some of the noises of the sludge enemies. The voice acting is good, but could have been better. Mario's voice actor did a great job, but the programmers made it get very repetitive. The other characters have decent voices in the cutscenes, but when you actually talk to them, their voices sound like noises as you read their text. The music, on the other hand, is superb. It never gets old! (with an exception) The tropical themes are well done, and I give it two thumbs up.

Summary:

Story: 7.3/10 The story is better than most Mario games, but is not as good as an average story line.

Gameplay: 9.7/10 The gameplay is madly fun in Super Mario Sunshine. The only complaint is that all of the stages were tropical.

Replayability: 8.9/10 This game won't last long for players who want to beat the game normally, but it will take forever to collect all the shines.

Graphics: 9.4/10 The water looks as beautiful as in real life! The backgrounds look great, too. The characters are okay, but could have been better (with some exceptions).

Sound: 9.6/10 The sound effects are great, so is the great Mario mixed with Hawaiian music. Most of the voices are pretty good, but the noises people make when you talk to them get repetitive.

Overall: 9.7/10 Super Mario Sunshine has a better storyline than regular Mario Games and excellent gamplay with FLUDD. It won't take you long to beat the game normally, but it will to beat it with all the shines. The graphics are superb and so is the sound. Nearly everything in this game is perfect. About the only thing left out was Luigi... Overall, this is my Favorite Adventure Game!
