Yoshi Touch and Go is a rather simple game which makes excellent use of the touch pad feature of the DS. Overall this is a decent game, but I'd only recommend it to Yoshi fans. I'll start with pros, then move on to cons.
Yoshi Touch and Go, perhaps more than any other Nintendo DS game I've played (which to be honest is only three or four) makes fabulous use of the touch screen. The entire game can be played with the touch pad, which gives Yoshi Touch and Go a uniqueness that makes it stand out. Being a left-handed person, I was particularily impressed by the feature of this game which allowed the player to change the direction that Yoshi walked in. When using one's left hand in the game, it was very hard to see the screen, so having Yoshi walk towards the left instead made things a lot easier. Perhaps partially to do with the stylus gaming, but also in general, I find this to be a fairly challenging game. It's not unplayable or anything, and with a little practice one can get quite good at it, but it certainly isn't easy. It seems to be quite a good balance. . . easy enough so that anyone can enjoy it, but difficult enough that it isn't immediately boring.
Just to mention quickly, the presentation of Yoshi Touch and Go was quite strong. The graphics are fabulous. Yoshi was given a new, extremely cute look (which us Yoshi fans know is a delight beyond words). As well, the new and old, remixed music was quite enjoyable. And that's about it. No problems in that department.
On the other hand, there were a few features of the game that weren't as amazing as they could be. I for one thought the concept of the game was a little too simple. Sometimes a simple concept (look at tetris) can be brilliant and provide unlimited replay value, but I don't think Yoshi Touch and Go achieved this. There are several different modes (marathon, challenge, etc.) which allow for some variety, but they aren't different enough in my opinion. It's a fun game when one is in the mood for relaxing gaming, but it gets boring somewhat quickly due to the lack of variety. Also, the fact that every mode starts with Mario falling from the sky was a little annoying because I don't like that part.
So generally, Yoshi Touch and Go is a fairly good game. I can’t say it’s the best thing that has ever starred Yoshi, but it’s still enjoyable and worth one’s time. If you’re a Yoshi fan, then get it, because the cutsie music and images will be enough to make it worthwhile. I also recommend it if you’re into using the stylus to play. If you don’t like either of those things, I can’t say you’ll enjoy it, since that’s pretty much all there is to the game.
